Where to buy home decor in Dubai: how I refresh a rented apartment on a budget
You do not need to renovate to make a Dubai rental feel like yours. IKEA, Dragon Mart and Daiso for the basics, H&M Home and Home Centre for textiles and lamps, and one Crate & Barrel piece for impact, with nothing going into the walls.
Where to buy home decor in Dubai depends on which layer you are buying. IKEA (Festival City or Festival Plaza in Jebel Ali), Dragon Mart and Daiso for the bones and the bargains. H&M Home and Home Centre for the textiles and ceramics that change the mood of a room. Crate & Barrel, at Dubai Mall, Mall of the Emirates and City Centre Mirdif, for the one piece you keep for years. I rent, so nothing here involves a drill or a paintbrush, and most of it costs less than a dinner out.

This came up after a carousel I posted in June 2026, a week that took in The Meld, La DoubleJ and H&M Home, and the same question kept landing in my messages: where do you buy this here? H&M Home is my honest answer for most of the small stuff. The Dubai Mall concept store carries more than the other branches, including small furniture and lighting, and the cushion covers and throws are good enough that nobody asks the price. The other one I get asked about is the Samsung smart home set-up I saw in November 2025, with the non-reflective OLED screen. That is tech rather than decor, but in a living room with floor-to-ceiling windows, a screen with no glare changes how the room looks all afternoon.

How do I refresh a rented apartment without renovating?
Change everything that sits on top of the apartment, not the apartment. I do not fight the beige builder finishes, I cover them, and textiles do most of the work. A large rug from Dragon Mart or Home Centre defines the living area and hides tired flooring. New cushion covers and a throw from H&M Home change a sofa's mood for a few hundred dirhams. Curtains hung high and wide, even cheap ones from Dragon Mart on a tension rod or the existing track, make ceilings feel taller and a room feel finished. None of it goes into a wall, and all of it moves with you.
Which small changes make the biggest difference?
Lighting, every time. Most Dubai rentals come with harsh white ceiling lights, so I simply do not use them after dark. Two or three warm lamps from IKEA with soft bulbs and the same room feels like a different flat. After that:
- One leaning mirror. A narrow hallway or bedroom reads twice the size, and nothing touches the wall.
- A tall plant or two, real or a good faux from IKEA, to soften hard corners.
- Swap cupboard and drawer handles for nicer ones and keep the originals in a labelled bag to screw back before you move out.
- One good candle and one decent vase at eye level on the table you use most.
How do I mix cheap and expensive pieces?
Buy the bulk of a room cheap, then add one or two better things where your eye lands. Nobody can tell a cushion cost AED 15 when it sits beside one beautiful Crate & Barrel ceramic. My rule: spend on what you touch and see up close, save on everything else. The rest can come from Dragon Mart and IKEA and no guest will know. Your home should feel like you walked in, not like a showroom did.
How do I keep a Dubai apartment clean once it looks nice?
Decor only reads well in a tidy space, and Dubai fights you on this. Fine desert sand drifts in through windows and balcony frames, construction adds more, and the air conditioning, which runs most of the year, pulls dust through the flat and back out again. Hard water leaves white limescale on taps and glass. What works for someone who dislikes cleaning: a two-minute wipe of the surfaces that show dust, a quick vacuum twice a week near the balcony doors and windows where sand lands first, a weekly spray of white vinegar and water (roughly one part to three) on taps and glass, and the AC filters cleaned every few months, which cuts the dust more than any product. Keep the balcony door shut on hazy days. For the vacuum, cordless with strong suction and a HEPA-style filter is the one that actually gets used, because there is nothing to drag out. What I would skip
- Anything that needs a drill in a rental. Command strips, leaning mirrors and tension rods do the job.
- Buying a full matching set from one store. Rooms that look bought in one go feel like a showroom.
- Dragon Mart on a weekend afternoon. Go on a weekday morning and negotiate on the rug, not the cushions.
- Paying full price for lamps and storage in November. White Friday and then the Dubai Shopping Festival land within weeks.
Before you go
Check which IKEA is nearer before you drive, because the two are on opposite sides of the city with a similar range. Dragon Mart is in International City and is best done with a list and some cash for the smaller shops. Most stores deliver; ask about assembly fees when you order. Start with one room: one rug, two lamps, a few cushion covers, a mirror. That is a weekend and a few hundred dirhams, and the landlord never needs to know.
