How to start yoga in Dubai as a beginner (studios, beach classes, what it costs)

To start yoga in Dubai as a beginner, book a Hatha or gentle flow class on a studio intro offer, usually AED 99 to 199 for a week or more of unlimited classes, and go twice a week for a month. From October to April add a Sunday morning beach session at Kite Beach. Then keep it alive with a five-minute routine at home. That is the whole plan, and it works because it is small.

Yoga is the part of my week that asks nothing of me except to breathe. I have practised for years, and my goals reel for this year put yoga-led movement at the top for a reason: it is the thing that makes everything else, padel, training, long shoot days, possible.

Which yoga style should a beginner start with?

Search the timetable for Hatha, gentle flow or restorative. Hatha is slow and holds poses long enough to learn them. Gentle flow links them with breath. Restorative is mostly lying on props, which is not lazy, it is the point. Skip power yoga, Ashtanga and hot classes for the first month. Aerial and swing classes are great fun (I have done swing yoga, and it is a sweat), but do them once you can hold a plank.

Where can I practise yoga in Dubai?

Most studios welcome complete beginners and lend mats. These are the ones I know or that friends rate, with a plain note on which is which.

Beach yoga at Kite Beach

From October to around April, Sole Mio on Kite Beach runs Yoga Sundays at 8:30am for an hour. It was AED 60 at the time of writing, free if you are a Sole Mio customer that day, and the fee supports the beach cleaners. Sessions stop for the summer and return in October. There are also donation-based sunrise sessions on the sand most winters; look on Instagram the week before. Practising as the sun comes up over the water is one of my favourite things about living here.

What I actually do

The handstand reel I posted last spring was captioned "it's a routine, not just a reel", and that is the truth of it. Most days it is a short practice before the day gets loud. The swing yoga clip from a few years ago ("swing equals sweat") is the fun end of the same habit.

This year's International Yoga Day was a morning at Villa Sage with L'Occitane: a slow class, then simply breathing. Last November I had a similar morning at Keyani Wellness for a Teatro Firenze fragrance launch, and in June a movement and mindfulness session at The Lana with Beyond Wellness. Three very different rooms, same lesson: the room matters less than turning up.

Disclosure: L'Occitane and Teatro Firenze invited me to their events, and Beyond Wellness is a brand I have worked with. My opinion is my own.

Figures are at the time of writing. The intro offer is the smart way in: you see three teachers in a week and find out whether you like the studio before you pay for a month.

Indoor or outdoor, and what time?

From May to September it is indoors, in air conditioning, no argument. From October to April the beach and the parks are glorious. Either way, go early. The air is cooler, the studio is quieter, and you have not yet checked your phone. If mornings are impossible, a 7pm restorative class is the next best thing for sleep.

A five-minute routine for home

  1. Sit and take ten slow breaths before you touch your phone.
  2. Cat-cow for a minute, then a forward fold, then a gentle twist each side.
  3. Three slow sun salutations if you have the energy.
  4. Lie still for one minute.

Do it badly and do it most days. Consistency beats a perfect pose every time.

Questions people also ask

Is yoga good for complete beginners?

Yes. A beginner Hatha or gentle flow class is built for people who cannot touch their toes. You do not need to be flexible or calm to start; those come with practice.

How much does a yoga class cost in Dubai?

A drop-in is roughly AED 90 to 180 at the time of writing. Intro offers, usually AED 99 to 199 for a week or more of unlimited classes, are the cheapest way to try a studio.

Where is the best beach yoga in Dubai?

Kite Beach. Sole Mio runs Yoga Sundays at 8:30am from October to spring, around AED 60, and donation-based sunrise sessions pop up on the sand through winter.

Can I do yoga in Dubai in summer?

Indoors, yes, and it is a good season to start because studios are quiet and run offers. Outdoor classes stop from roughly May to September and return in October.

What should I bring to my first yoga class?

Water, a small towel and clothes you can move in. Most studios lend mats. For beach yoga add a hat, sunscreen and something to sit on.
