Where to buy gold in Dubai: the complete guide for 2025

Gold has always meant something more than metal to me. A pair of jhumkas worn to a best friend's wedding. A chain bought on Dhanteras because the year had been good and it felt right to mark it. Every piece I own is attached to a moment. If you live in Dubai, you also happen to live in one of the most trusted gold markets on the planet, which means those moments can be celebrated with real quality at genuinely competitive prices. Here is everything you need to know.

Why is gold cheaper in Dubai?

The short answer: low taxes, no import duties, and fierce competition. Low import duties, no income tax on dealers, VAT zero-rating on investment gold, and fierce competition among Gold Souk retailers all keep Dubai gold prices competitive. "Dubai is an international gold trading hub that imports gold from across the world with minimal import duties and no sales tax on bullion. In India, gold attracts higher import duties and local taxes, which increase the overall retail price," explains Anil Dhanak, Managing Director of Kanz Jewels. Kanz Jewels is actually my personal go-to for unique pieces, and I have featured them here on the blog before, most recently around Dhanteras when I was looking for something that felt meaningful rather than just shiny.

UAE VAT at 5% applies only to the making charge, not the underlying gold. Investment-grade gold of 99% purity or higher (24K bars and coins) is entirely zero-rated for VAT, which is why Dubai is one of the world's most tax-efficient gold markets.

Tourists also get a bonus: there is a 5% VAT on jewellery, but tourists can apply for a refund when they leave using the Tax-Free system. To take advantage of this option, you must make a purchase at a participating store and present the relevant documents when leaving the country. Residents do not get this refund, but we still benefit from the underlying price advantage every day.

The best places to buy gold in Dubai

1. Deira Gold Souk

The Gold Souk, located close to the waterfront in the historic Deira district, is arguably the most well-known place to buy gold in Dubai. It is one of the city's oldest street markets, featuring almost 400 retailers, many of whom have been in operation for more than four decades.

The original Gold Souk tends to sell classic, heritage-based Arabian and Indian jewellery, while the new extension leans toward contemporary styles. Prices here are generally much lower than they would be in a high-end boutique due to the high levels of competition among vendors. Bargaining is also a standard practice, which can lead to a very well-priced purchase, especially if buying in bulk.

Brands worth knowing inside the Souk: Malabar Gold, Damas, and Bafleh Jewellers. Malabar is known for variety and craftsmanship, and their stores are ideal for everyday wear and special occasions alike. They also stock gold coins and watches, and even offer gift cards for festive giving. With multiple locations, including Dubai Gold Souk shops, Al Barsha, Deira, Karama and Rigga, this brand is a solid pick.

2. Gold & Diamond Park, Sheikh Zayed Road

Located off the main highway of Sheikh Zayed Road, Gold & Diamond Park is a shopping mall that is purely dedicated to the sale of jewellery. Set across two levels, the mall serves as a modernised version of the souks and bazaars. Gold & Diamond Park is home to some of Dubai's most famous jewellery brands and also has its own manufacturing facilities where you can commission bespoke pieces from skilled artisans.

The Gold and Diamond Park is a contemporary shopping mall with air conditioning and bright lights. Located along Sheikh Zayed Road, the mall houses roughly 90 jewellery retailers and more than 110 manufacturing centers. If you want a custom engagement ring or a bridal set with specific design requirements, this is the place. You can sit with a jeweller, sketch a design, and have it made, often within a few days.

I was also introduced to Dialmaz Jewellery at the Jewels of Emirates Show at Expo Centre Sharjah earlier this year, and their approach to fine, certified diamond jewellery reminded me exactly of the calibre you find at Gold & Diamond Park boutiques. That kind of discovery is what makes the UAE's jewellery scene so exciting right now.

3. Dubai Mall

Dubai Mall has its own 'souk', a themed wing of the famed shopping centre that pays homage to the city's traditional markets. This is where many of the mall's gold retailers are located. You can find rare and beautifully crafted pieces of jewellery, complemented by a range of boutique services.

If you prefer no haggling, the Dubai Mall is a spot where international brands like Cartier, Tiffany & Co and De Beers congregate. Tanishq is also here, and if you are part of the South Asian community, Tanishq is known for its refined craftsmanship, blending traditional Indian designs with contemporary styles, and is especially popular among the Indian expat community looking for authenticity and quality.

4. Mall of the Emirates and other malls

Mall of the Emirates is a place where renowned jewellery brands operate, offering both classic and modern jewellery designs. Pure Gold and Jawhara have outlets here. Jawhara is a household name in the UAE. Their stores stock gold ranging from 18K to 21K, and their bridal collection is a favourite among shoppers looking for wedding pieces.

I have covered Be Divalicious trunk shows featuring over 60 curated designer labels, and the calibre of jewellery presented at those events reflects exactly the kind of thoughtful, occasion-driven buying that Dubai does well. If you want something beyond the high street, keeping an eye on curated pop-ups and trunk shows in Dubai is genuinely worth your time.

How buying gold in Dubai actually works: the price formula

The price you pay for gold jewellery has two components: the gold rate (based on international spot price) and making charges (the craftsmanship fee). The gold rate is non-negotiable, it is set by the market and all shops charge the same per-gram rate for each karat. Making charges, however, are absolutely negotiable.

Today's rates as a reference point: 24K gold is AED 501 per gram, 22K is AED 460 per gram, 21K is AED 439 per gram, and 18K gold is AED 376 per gram. These change daily, so always check the DGJG rate on the day you buy.

Making charges by jewellery type:

Under Dubai Consumer Protection regulations, jewellery shops must display the DGJG official gold rate prominently, itemise the making charges separately on the receipt, and provide a receipt for all gold purchases. If a shop refuses to break down the price, walk away.

Where to buy gold without making charges (or very low making charges)

This is a real thing in Dubai. Gold bars and coins have minimal charges. For jewellery, some shops in the Gold Souk do carry pieces with zero or near-zero making charges, particularly plain machine-made bangles and chains. Ask directly: "Do you have pieces with zero making charge?" It is a completely normal question.

Buying 50g or more, or multiple pieces in one transaction, gives you real leverage. Shops accept 20, 30% reductions on making charges for large orders. Wedding shopping and festive buying, like Dhanteras or wedding season, is where this negotiation power really matters.

Many establishments have seasonal discounts that lower or waive making charges, notably during festivals and shopping events. Dubai Shopping Festival and Diwali are two of the best times to buy.

Which karat gold should you buy?

Common uses: 24K for bars and coins, 22K for traditional jewellery, 21K for Arabic-style, 18K for designer pieces.

22K (91.67% pure) is the most popular choice for traditional jewellery in the Middle East and South Asia. It is durable enough for daily wear while maintaining a rich gold colour. If you are buying for a wedding, an anniversary, or a cultural occasion like Dhanteras, 22K is almost always the right answer. If you want something to wear every day to the office or layer with other jewellery, 18K in a contemporary design tends to hold up better and looks cleaner against modern outfits.

Is gold cheaper in Dubai than in India?

On average, 24K gold is 5, 7% cheaper in Dubai than in major Indian cities. Dubai gold buyers continue to find better value compared to India, even though both countries follow the same international benchmark for gold prices. The difference lies not in the global rate, but in the way taxes, duties, and making charges are applied across the two markets.

Making charges are typically 3, 8 percentage points lower than Indian retail averages for similar jewellery types. The concentration of manufacturers in Dubai Gold Souk drives competition.

The important caveat for those of us who travel back to India: gold is usually cheaper to buy in Dubai than in India on the shop floor. But if you are carrying it home, the final landed cost is what matters: shop price plus customs duty plus any taxes payable on arrival. Know your duty-free allowance before you buy, and keep your invoice with weight, karat, and price clearly listed.

Where to buy gold at Dubai airport (Terminal 3)

Dubai Duty Free, operating at Dubai International Airport, is one of the world's largest duty-free retailers and sells gold products in the departures hall. Gold available includes gold bars (1g, 5g, 10g, 1oz, 100g) primarily PAMP Suisse and Emirates Gold branded, gold coins, and a limited selection of 18K and 22K jewellery pieces. The DDF gold section is located airside in both Terminal 1 and Terminal 3.

For investment gold (bars and coins), airport duty-free prices are comparable to the Gold Souk, sometimes slightly higher due to the convenience premium. DDF prices are updated daily in line with global spot prices. For gold jewellery, the Gold Souk is significantly cheaper, as the airport has higher making charges and a far smaller selection.

My honest advice: if you need gold bars or coins for investment and you are already at the airport, DDF is fine. For jewellery, always buy in the city. The selection and pricing at the Souk or Gold & Diamond Park is simply incomparable.

The best places to buy diamond jewellery in Dubai

Dubai is globally recognised as one of the top destinations for buying diamonds because of its strong regulation, competitive prices, and wide selection of certified stones and fine jewellery. Dubai's diamond market benefits from low taxes, high trade volumes, and strict standards enforced by government authorities. Most reputable stores sell diamonds that are GIA or IGI certified.

A 1-carat diamond in Dubai usually costs AED 12,000 to AED 35,000, depending on quality and certification. That is a wide range, and the difference is almost entirely down to cut quality and certification. Always ask for a GIA or IGI certificate, and always ask to see the grading report, not just the certificate number.

For engagement rings specifically, Gold & Diamond Park is the most practical destination. The idea was to create a one-stop shop for all things jewellery, a modern version of the Gold Souk. There are more than 90 brands and retailers in this vast space off the Sheikh Zayed Road. You have boutiques for bespoke design, family-run stores with decades of expertise, and everything in between, all without the noise and pressure of the open souk.

For pure luxury, the Dubai Mall carries Cartier, Bulgari, and De Beers. These brands have fixed prices globally, so there is no negotiation, but you do get the full brand experience and after-care service, which matters for an engagement ring.

How to buy gold in Dubai: a quick checklist

  1. Check the DGJG rate that morning. The DGJG publishes official retail rates each morning. Use goldratesindubai.com or goldtrackuae.com before you leave home.
  2. Always ask for the making charge separately. Always ask "what's the making charge?" before discussing the price. This is where your negotiating power actually lives.
  3. Check the hallmark. All gold sold in the UAE must be hallmarked with the karat purity by an accredited assay office. Look for the hallmark stamp on every piece, it shows the karat (for example, 750 for 18K, 916 for 22K, 999 for 24K) and the assay office mark.
  4. Ask for an itemised receipt. Request the receipt to show: gold weight, per-gram rate, making charge amount, and VAT. You will need this if you resell, if there is ever a dispute, or if you travel internationally.
  5. Compare across at least three shops. Making charges for identical designs can vary 5, 10 percentage points between shops. Ten minutes of comparison can save AED 200 or more on a 10g piece.

Online gold shopping in Dubai

Most of the major brands, including Damas, Malabar Gold, Pure Gold, and Joyalukkas, have functional e-commerce sites for UAE delivery. For investment gold online, iGold.ae is a reputable option for bars and coins with transparent live pricing. If you want jewellery with character, the Trunk Show model, like the one Be Divalicious runs, is becoming a genuinely good way to discover independent designers with pieces you will not find in a mall. Worth following on Instagram.

Questions people also ask

Is gold cheaper in Dubai than in India?

Yes. On average, 24K gold is 5, 7% cheaper in Dubai than in major Indian cities. The difference comes from Dubai's minimal import duties and no GST equivalent. However, if you are travelling back to India, factor in customs duty on anything above your duty-free allowance, because this can reduce or eliminate your saving depending on how much you buy.

Is gold cheaper in Dubai than in the UK or USA?

Generally yes. The UK applies 20% VAT to gold jewellery purchases, and the US adds state sales tax plus import duties on gold jewellery of 3, 6.5%. Dubai's 5% VAT (refundable for tourists) and near-zero import duties mean the effective price is typically lower. The gap varies with exchange rates, so check on the day you plan to buy.

Where can I buy gold in Dubai without paying making charges?

Gold bars and coins carry minimal or zero making charges. For jewellery, some shops in the Deira Gold Souk carry plain machine-made bangles and chains at very low or zero making charge, and during festivals like Diwali and Dubai Shopping Festival, many shops waive or reduce making charges. Always ask directly: 'Do you have zero making charge pieces?'

Is it worth buying gold at Dubai airport (Terminal 3)?

For investment gold (bars, coins), Dubai Duty Free at Terminal 3 is comparable to the Gold Souk in price. For jewellery, the airport has higher making charges and a much smaller selection, so if you have any time in the city, shop there instead. The airport is a last resort for jewellery, not a bargain destination.

What is the best karat of gold to buy in Dubai?

22K is the most popular for traditional and bridal jewellery. It is 91.67% pure, durable, and has a rich yellow colour that suits South Asian and Arabic styles. 18K is better for everyday contemporary wear and designer pieces, and is the standard used by international luxury brands. 24K is for investment only as it is too soft for jewellery.

How do I verify gold purity when buying in Dubai?

Check for the hallmark stamp on every piece, which shows the karat fineness (750 for 18K, 916 for 22K, 999 for 24K) and the assay office mark. Dubai's Bareeq certification, issued by the Dubai Central Laboratories Department, guarantees purity. Always get an itemised receipt showing weight, karat, per-gram rate, and making charges.
