How to keep handbags alive in Dubai heat: leather and vegan leather

To care for leather bags in a hot, humid climate like Dubai's you are fighting three things: heat that dries the hide, air conditioning that dries it further, and the sunscreen and sweat on your own hands. Store each bag in its cotton dust bag away from the window and the AC vent, keep sunscreen off the handles, and leave good leather at home on beach days. Vegan leather has one extra rule: never leave it in a parked car.

What does Dubai's climate actually do to a bag?

Leather is skin, and it wants a little moisture and a steady temperature. Summer heat pulls the oils out and leaves it stiff. The AC indoors pulls moisture out in a different way, so a bag that lives near a vent can crack within a couple of seasons. Then the humid months arrive from about July and tip the other way: a bag shut in a sealed cupboard with no air can grow mould. Sweat and sea air also dull brass and gold-tone clasps faster than you would expect.

The worst single thing you can do to any bag here is leave it in the car. A parked car in a Dubai summer gets far hotter than any wardrobe, and that is enough to warp a frame, soften glue and, on vegan leather, start the peeling that never stops.

How should I store bags at home?

How do I keep sunscreen and sweat off the leather?

This is the everyday damage nobody warns you about. Sunscreen oils soak into the grain of a handle and leave a yellowing mark that is very hard to shift later. My rule is to let the SPF absorb fully and wash my hands before I pick up the bag. If something does land on the leather, blot it with a dry microfibre cloth straight away and never rub, because rubbing pushes it in. For a fresh oily mark, a little cornstarch left on for a few hours can draw some of the oil out before you brush it off. Pale handles also pick up dye from dark denim in the heat, so keep light bags away from new jeans.

What about rain, the beach and the pool?

Leave leather and any exotic skin at home for the pool, the beach and the sudden winter downpours. Chlorine, salt and sand are brutal, and sand scratches like fine sandpaper. Use canvas, raffia or a coated tote on those days. If a leather bag does get wet, blot it, stuff it, let it dry naturally away from sun and AC, and condition it once it is fully dry. Never a hairdryer.

How often should I clean and condition?

Wipe with a soft dry cloth after each use to lift dust and sand. Condition every two to four months with a proper leather conditioner, a thin layer, patch tested somewhere hidden first. Do not flood leather with water or household sprays. A little honest patina is better than a bag that has been scrubbed.

Where can I get a bag cleaned in Dubai?

For deep cleaning, colour touch-ups, stitching or hardware, use a specialist. The names I would start with are Washmen BagCare (app based, with pickup and delivery, and a quote after they inspect the bag), The Finery and The Cobbler, and for exotic skins like python or croc, Italian Shoe Factory. Tell them the brand and the material up front, ask for a quote, and expect restoration or recolouring to cost a lot more than a clean.

What if the bag is vegan leather?

Most vegan leather is polyurethane, a thin plastic film bonded to a fabric base. It fails by hydrolysis: moisture starts breaking the coating down and heat speeds it up, which is why a cheap PU bag left in a hot car peels within a season. A well made one, kept cool and stored properly, can last years. I will not give you a number of years, because the figures circulating online come from nowhere.

Before you buy, check five things:

  1. The cut edges of the strap and flap are sealed and smooth. Fraying fabric at the edge means it will peel from there inwards.
  2. Corners are stitched, not only glued.
  3. The zip runs with one hand.
  4. Stand it on the table empty. If it collapses completely it will crease, and creases in PU become cracks.
  5. A neat fabric lining usually means the rest was made with the same care.

Care is simpler than leather: a barely damp cloth, dried straight away, no alcohol wipes, and no hide conditioner, because PU cannot absorb it. Same storage rules as above, and the car rule twice over.

What I actually carry

I use my bags. In May 2026 I filmed myself heading out in an Acler set with an Hermès bag and Chanel shoes, captioned "make the money, say the prayer, wear the outfit", and that Hermès bag goes out with a full Zara look as often as with anything designer. The storage rules above are the ones it lives by. A bag like that is the reason I would rather own two good ones than ten, which I explain in how to dress in your 40s.

At the other end of the price range, I have worn JW Pei since August 2024, when I first posted the black Heart mini and the red Crystal Abacus mini, and I was still choosing the brand in August 2026 with a bag from Ounass. The question that follows every vegan leather post is whether it peels. My honest view: for the price the construction is good, the structured shapes hold up better than the slouchy ones, and everything I said about cars and sun applies twice. JW Pei is stocked in the UAE at Ounass, Namshi and Amazon.ae, and the range sits in the low hundreds of AED. Check the current price, it moves.

Disclosure: JW Pei is a brand I have worked with, and the Ounass post used my discount code. My opinion is my own.

Questions people also ask

Can I leave a leather bag in my car in Dubai?

No, not even for an hour. A parked car in summer gets far hotter than any room, which dries and warps leather, softens glue and can lift the coating on vegan leather. Take the bag with you or leave it at home.

Does vegan leather peel in Dubai's humidity?

It can. Polyurethane breaks down through hydrolysis, which moisture starts and heat accelerates. A well made bag with sealed edges, stored in a breathable dust bag and kept out of hot cars, lasts far longer than a cheap one, but no PU bag survives a summer on a car seat.

Where can I buy JW Pei bags in the UAE?

Ounass, Namshi and Amazon.ae all stock JW Pei, and the range sits in the low hundreds of AED at the time of writing. Use the returns window, because colours read differently in Dubai daylight than on a screen.

How do I stop mould growing on bags in a humid flat?

Breathable cotton dust bags, a silica gel sachet inside each one through the humid months, a cupboard that is ventilated rather than airtight, and a monthly airing for every bag, including the ones you are not using.

How do I clean a vegan leather bag at home?

Wipe it with a cloth that is barely damp, then dry it immediately with a soft cloth. Do not soak it, do not use alcohol wipes, and do not use leather conditioner, which PU cannot absorb. Wipe more often in the humid months.

How much does professional bag cleaning cost in Dubai?

It depends on the size, the material and what needs doing, and most specialists quote after inspecting the bag. Expect a simple clean to start in the low hundreds of AED and restoration, recolouring or exotic skins to cost considerably more. Ask for a quote first.
