How Do You Care for Designer Bags in Dubai's Heat and Humidity?

My bags are some of the things I treasure most, and the Dubai climate is genuinely hard on them. The heat, the humidity, the sand, the constant AC, it all adds up. Here is exactly how I look after mine so they age beautifully instead of falling apart.

What does Dubai's climate actually do to a leather bag?
Our weather works against leather from two directions. The outdoor heat dries it out and pulls the natural oils from the hide, which leads to stiffness and cracking over time. Then the indoor air conditioning does the opposite kind of damage, sucking moisture out so fast that the leather can feel brittle.
Humidity is the other enemy. When the air sits above roughly 70 percent moisture, leather becomes a perfect home for mould, especially anything tucked away in a cupboard and forgotten. Hardware suffers too. Sweat, sea air, and damp tarnish brass and gold-tone clasps faster than you would expect here.
How should I store my bags at home?
Always keep each bag in its cotton dust bag, never in plastic or a sealed box. Plastic traps humidity against the leather and that is how mould starts. Cotton lets the leather breathe.
Two placement rules I never break. Keep bags out of direct sunlight, because our sun fades and dries leather shockingly quickly through a window. And keep them away from the direct blast of an AC vent, because that cold dry stream cracks leather over months.
A few practical habits that help:
- Stuff the bag with tissue paper or its original insert so it holds shape and does not crease.
- Pop a silica gel sachet inside the dust bag to soak up excess moisture.
- Aim for a cool, dark, ventilated cupboard rather than a tightly sealed one.
- Take each bag out once a month to air it, even the ones you are not using.
How do I handle sweat, sunscreen, and oil transfer?
This is the daily-life damage nobody warns you about. In our heat we sweat, and we wear sunscreen, and both transfer straight onto handles and corners. Sunscreen is the worst offender because the oils soak into the grain and leave greasy, yellowing marks that are very hard to remove later.
My rule is simple. Let sunscreen fully absorb and wash or wipe my hands before I pick up the bag. If something does land on the leather, blot it gently with a dry microfibre cloth straight away, never rub, because rubbing pushes it deeper. For a fresh oily mark you can sprinkle a little cornstarch over it and leave it for several hours to draw the oil out, then brush it off softly.

What about rain days and trips to the pool or beach?
Honestly, leave your good leather and any exotic skin at home for the pool, the beach, or those sudden winter downpours. Chlorine, salt water, and sand are brutal, and sand scratches like fine sandpaper. A canvas or coated tote is the smarter choice for those days.
If your bag does get caught in rain, do not dry it with heat or a hairdryer. Blot it with a soft cloth, stuff it to keep its shape, and let it air dry naturally away from sun and the AC. Once it is fully dry, follow up with conditioner.
How often should I clean and condition?
For everyday care, wipe your bag with a soft dry cloth after using it to lift off dust, sweat, and sand before they settle in. Then condition the leather every two to four months with a proper leather conditioner to replace the oils our climate strips away. Test any product on a hidden spot first, and go gently, a thin layer is plenty.
Do not flood leather with water or random household sprays. Less is genuinely more, and over-cleaning does more harm than a little honest patina.
