What to wear to a wedding in Dubai as a female guest
Ask what kind of wedding it is first. Emirati weddings want long, covered and colourful; South Asian weddings want a saree, lehenga or fusion set; expat weddings want a polished midi or maxi. Never white, and bring a wrap from October to February.
What to wear to a wedding in Dubai as a female guest depends on one question you must ask before you open the wardrobe: what kind of wedding is it? An Emirati wedding, a South Asian wedding and an expat or mixed wedding each expect something different, and the invitation, the venue and the time of day settle the rest. Long and covered for Emirati, saree or lehenga for South Asian, a good midi or maxi for everything else, and never white.
What to wear to an Emirati wedding as a female guest
I have not been a guest at an Emirati wedding myself, so treat this section as the rules I would follow rather than a report from the room. Most Emirati weddings are split by gender, and the women's celebration is the dressy one. Arrive covered, with an abaya or a long coat over your outfit. Inside the women's hall, guests wear long gowns, embellished kaftans and jalabiyas in real colour. A plain black everyday abaya reads as if you came straight from the supermarket, so wear something festive underneath or choose an abaya that is clearly occasion wear.
Keep shoulders, arms and knees covered and skip anything sheer without lining. You do not need a headscarf as a non-Muslim guest, but carry a light shawl anyway. Expect phones to stay in bags during the women's party; ask your host before taking any photos. If in doubt, ask your host what she is wearing and go one notch quieter.
What to wear to an Indian or Pakistani wedding in Dubai
This is my home ground. South Asian weddings here run over several days, and each event has its own level. Haldi and mehndi are daytime and lighter: organza, chiffon, a soft cotton-silk suit. The sangeet is where you have fun with colour and a skirt that moves. The wedding and the reception are where the heavy embroidery comes out: a lehenga, a worked saree, or a fusion set with a long embellished top. Leave full red to the bride and think twice about white-heavy outfits for the same reason.
What I actually wore: for wedding season in late 2024 I picked a Mahgul fusion silhouette with the label's signature embroidery and a hand-embellished motif, styled with Vibha Jewells pieces. At the end of 2025 I wore a Layla Chatoor lehenga with House of Sa.ra jewels, and I am still thinking about it. Both taught me the same thing: one heavy piece plus one quieter piece beats two heavy pieces every time.

What to wear to an expat or mixed wedding in Dubai
Hotel ballroom, beach lawn or a villa garden: the answer is a midi or maxi dress, a tailored jumpsuit or polished separates in a fabric that holds its shape. Dubai guests dress up, so a casual wrap dress will feel underdone in a Downtown ballroom. Afternoon weddings take lighter colours; evening weddings take deeper ones. Wedding season here runs roughly October to February, and an outdoor evening by the water can drop to a temperature where bare arms are not fun, so bring a wrap or a cropped jacket. In summer, weddings move indoors and late, and the air conditioning is fierce; a lined dress in crepe or silk will be more comfortable than a thin slip.
Which colours work, and which to avoid
Emerald, deep navy, burgundy, cobalt, dusty rose and a proper bronze all photograph well under ballroom lighting and in garden light. Never white, ivory or cream, and be careful with very pale champagne, which turns white in flash photos. Do not match the bridesmaids if you know their colour. At a South Asian wedding, avoid full red; at an Emirati wedding, I would avoid head-to-toe gold and leave the biggest sparkle to the bride's family.
Shoes and jewellery for a Dubai wedding
Dubai venues are marble inside and gravel, grass or sand outside, often at the same wedding. A block heel, a kitten heel or a flat embellished sandal will carry you from the ceremony to the dance floor. Stilettos are for the photos, not the night. For jewellery, match the wedding: layered and generous at a South Asian wedding, one statement piece at an expat wedding, polished and not flashy at an Emirati one. Where to buy a wedding guest outfit in Dubai
- Meena Bazaar, Bur Dubai: sarees, lehengas and suits across every budget, from a few hundred dirhams to several thousand for heavy work, plus tailors who will make a blouse in about a week. Allow longer before Eid and Diwali when the tailors are swamped.
- DIVAlicious pop-ups: a travelling exhibition of Indian and Pakistani designers that lands in Dubai a few times a year, usually at Jumeirah Emirates Towers and more recently at Taj Business Bay. I have been going since September 2024 and have seen it run with anything from 25 to over 100 brands depending on the edition. Entry has been free in my experience. At the last two editions I was in SVA Couture and Aarti Vijay Gupta, both exhibitors.
- Boulevard One: a multi-designer showroom in Building 6 at Dubai Design District, plus trunk shows at the Address Sky View ballroom where labels such as Gulaal, Haseens and Layla Chatoor have shown. Check their Instagram for dates and current hours before you go.
- Curated by Zahraa: a one-day designer exhibition at One and Only Royal Mirage. The February 2025 edition I shot for had Zainab Salman's silks and prints and Akanksha Mago's mirror work.
- Ounass and Bloomingdale's Dubai Mall for designer gowns and jumpsuits, and Zara or Mango for a budget midi that still looks like you tried.

Mistakes I see at Dubai weddings
- Stilettos on a lawn. You will spend the night on your toes.
- No wrap in January. The dinner is outside and it is 16 degrees by midnight.
- A black abaya to an Emirati wedding because it felt safe. It reads as everyday, not festive.
- Champagne satin that turns white in every photo.
- A heavy velvet lehenga to a daytime mehndi in October. You will melt before the food arrives.
