How to stop makeup melting in Dubai heat

Makeup melts in Dubai because heat, sweat and oil soften every layer at once. The fix is fewer, thinner layers in the right order: settled SPF, primer only where you get oily, foundation pressed in, cream colour set with powder, then a setting spray.

To stop makeup melting in Dubai heat you need fewer layers, not stronger ones. Keep skincare light and let it sink in, give your SPF a few minutes to settle, prime only the T-zone, press foundation in rather than painting it on, use cream colour and then set it with powder where you get oily, and finish with a setting spray from about 30 cm. The order, and the waiting between steps, matters more than any single product. I have done my face in a cool bedroom and watched it slide by Sheikh Zayed Road enough times to know.

Why does makeup melt so fast in Dubai?

Three things hit at once. Heat softens every product on your face and makes your skin produce more oil. Humidity, especially along the coast in August, adds water on top of that. Then the air conditioning indoors dries your skin out, so it pumps out even more oil to compensate. Your makeup has to survive the walk to the car at 43 degrees and then eight hours at 21 degrees in recycled air. Heavy layers fail this test fastest because there is simply more product to move. Thin layers, each given time to set, fuse to the skin instead of sitting on top of it.

The nine-step method that lasts from the car park to dinner

1. Light skincare. Gel cleanser, a hydrating serum or gel moisturiser, nothing rich. Let it absorb completely. Wet skincare under foundation is the number one cause of sliding.
2. SPF 50, then wait. Two fingers' worth, then three to five minutes before anything else. A mattifying sunscreen can do the job of a primer and save you a layer.
3. Primer on the T-zone only. Forehead, nose, chin. Your cheeks do not need it if they do not break down.
4. Foundation pressed in with a damp sponge. One thin coat, then a second thin coat only where you want more. Less product, better hold.
5. Concealer where it is needed, not all over. Under the eyes and on spots.
6. Cream blush and bronzer now, before any powder. Pat them in with warm fingers until the edges disappear.
7. Powder, only where you get oily. Press translucent powder into the T-zone and over the cream blush. Bake under the eyes for a few minutes if you crease there, then dust off.
8. Setting spray from about 30 cm, then leave your face alone for 30 seconds while it dries.
9. Blot, do not add. Through the day, press a blotting sheet on the shine. Powder on top of oil is how you get the grey, cakey look by 3pm.

Should you use cream or powder products in Dubai summer?

Both, in that order, and I am settling this once because my older posts disagreed with each other. Cream blush, bronzer and highlighter look like skin and move with your face, which is why they read fresh rather than chalky. On their own they will slip once your skin warms up. Powder alone lasts longer but goes patchy and flat by the afternoon. So: cream first, blended until the edges vanish, then a light press of matching powder blush or translucent powder over the top. You keep the glow of the cream and gain the staying power of the powder. Cream over powder pills, so never reverse the order. The one thing I skip outdoors is liquid highlighter on the nose and forehead, because that is exactly where you will shine on your own.

Which foundation is best for Dubai weather?

For a full day outdoors or a wedding, a long-wear formula like Estée Lauder Double Wear is the standard answer and it earns its reputation. For an ordinary day I do not want that much coverage in summer. A skin tint or a light serum foundation over a good SPF looks better at 5pm than a full face did at 9am, because there is less to break down. The foundation in my own lineup this year is YSL All Hours Glow, long-wear with a luminous finish, which is the balance I want here. Whatever you buy, test it on your jawline in the shop, then walk outside and look at it in daylight. Shop lighting is kind; the sun is not.

How do you stop eye makeup and lipstick smudging in humidity?

Eyes go first because lids are oily and the under-eye creases every time you smile. Use an eye primer, dust a little translucent powder over it, then your shadow. For liner, a waterproof gel or a felt-tip pen: KVD Beauty Tattoo Liner and Maybelline Tattoo Liner are both reliable. On the lower waterline, a nude or white kohl migrates less than black. For mascara, a tubing formula or a proper waterproof one. For lips, a stain or a light matte liquid as the base and a lip oil on top if you want shine. Gloss alone in August collects dust and slides off by the first coffee.

How do you keep makeup from melting in the car?

This is the Dubai-specific problem. The walk to the car and the first five minutes inside it undo more makeup than the rest of the day.

• Park under cover whenever you can. A basement space versus an open one is a difference of many degrees inside the car.
• Start the AC and let the car cool for a minute before you settle in.
• Keep blotting sheets and a travel-size setting spray in the glovebox. Blot and one spritz when you arrive, not before you leave.
• Never use setting spray inside a hot car. Wait until you are somewhere cool.
• Do not store makeup or sunscreen in the car. A cream stick left in a parked car in August does not recover.

What I actually use

From my Instagram over the past year, these are the things that have been through real Dubai days on my face.

• Kosas DreamBeam SPF 40. Moisturiser, sunscreen and primer in one on lighter days; Sunlit is the sheer-tinted shade. One correction: I called it SPF 30 in my reel last summer. Kosas lists it as SPF 40 PA++++, water-resistant for 80 minutes. It is a glowy-day product, not what I would put under a heavy base on very oily skin.
• Huda Beauty Easy Bake. The Duos give you a brightening shade and a correcting shade in one compact, which is handy for moving between venues, and the newer pressed version is officially in my routine for setting. Matcha Easy Bake and the Peach Corrector were in my glam lineup in March.
• Huda Beauty Liquid Matte Mousse with the Lip Contour 2.0 liner. A whipped matte that does not feel dry, which is what you want for a long evening.
• Maybelline Tattoo Liner and Sky High mascara. I wore the blue Tattoo Liner for a reel last summer and it did not budge, and Sky High got a genuine wow out of me on camera.
• KIKO Milano Power Shake Fixing Spray. The setting spray in my current lineup.
• Wet n Wild tinted lip oils. Cheap, juicy, a wash of colour. Layer one over a liner stain for a day lip that survives lunch.

Mistakes I see

Piling on more product because the last lot slid. Skipping moisturiser because skin feels oily, which makes it oilier. Putting primer all over the face when only the T-zone needs it. Powdering over oil at lunch instead of blotting first. Spraying setting spray from 10 cm so the face is wet and everything moves. And reapplying SPF once, at noon, then forgetting it; outdoors, it is every 2 to 3 hours.
