What to wear for a night out in Dubai, by venue

For a night out in Dubai, dress for the venue, layer for the building, and pick shoes you can still feel by midnight. Smart casual is the floor almost everywhere: no shorts, no flip-flops, nothing that reads as gym kit. The smarter rooms in DIFC and Downtown expect a proper dress or good separates, and the part nobody warns you about is the temperature swing, warm air on the pavement and dining rooms cold enough that you will want sleeves by the second course.

What is the dress code for a rooftop bar in Dubai?

Smart casual, and rooftops mean it. Sportswear, shorts and flip-flops are the standard refusals, so leave the slides and the gym vest at home. My default is a slip dress, or tailored trousers with a fitted top, in a fabric that breathes, because a rooftop is outdoors and holds the day's heat long after sunset. From November to March, carry something for later, when the breeze off the water genuinely turns cool.

Rooftop flooring is decking, gravel or uneven tile, so a block heel or a back-strap sandal beats a stiletto. CouCou sits 52 floors up in the Palm Tower and lists smart casual, but everyone there is being photographed against that view, so the room dresses well past the written rule. Read the room, not just the policy.

What do you wear to dinner in DIFC or Downtown?

This is the polished end of the city, and the standard is smart elegant. One well-cut piece and nothing fighting it: a midi dress, or trousers with a silk top, and a structured blazer. The blazer is not decoration. These dining rooms are kept properly cold and you will be sitting still for two hours.

Fine dining here is stricter than the marketing suggests. Coya at the Four Seasons Resort on Jumeirah Beach Road asks for smart and elegant dress and turns away shorts and open shoes on men, and most restaurants at that level run the same policy without spelling it out. If you are booking the food first and the outfit second, my list of restaurants for dinner with friends is where I would start.

What should you wear to a beach club at night?

Beach clubs change character at sunset, and this is where most people get it wrong. During the day it is swimwear under a cover-up and nobody minds. From about 7pm the same venue reads as a restaurant, and a bikini with a sarong knotted over it will feel underdressed the moment you sit at a table.

Wear something that is a complete outfit on its own: a kaftan, a shirt dress, or linen separates that happen to be over swimwear rather than obviously covering it. Flat leather slides handle sand and decking; heels sink. Take a light layer for after dark, especially between November and March, when the wind off the sea is sharper than you expect.

What do you wear to a lounge or a club in Dubai?

This is the most dressed-up part of Dubai nightlife. A dress that skims, a mesh or satin top over tailored trousers, or a sleek co-ord. Heels are the standard, and a small bag is practical rather than a style choice, because the rooms get packed. Door policies are real, particularly for large groups and for men in trainers, so treat a posted dress code as the minimum.

One thing that helps: plenty of Dubai venues are a restaurant upstairs and a club downstairs, so dinner becomes a night out without anyone going home to change. Dress for the later half.

How do you dress for the air conditioning?

Build every outfit around one removable layer, and choose it at the same time as the dress rather than on the way out of the door. A blazer, a long shirt, or a wrap in silk or viscose that folds into a small bag. If the layer looks deliberate when you carry it, you have picked the right one. This one habit is the difference between enjoying a long dinner and sitting through it with your arms folded, and it applies year round, because the buildings do not care what month it is.

Which shoes actually survive a Dubai night?

Once, and then I will stop: a block heel or a back-strap sandal for almost everything, a closed pointed flat or a low heel for fine dining, flat leather slides for anything with sand. Valet parking does not save you, because you still cross marble lobbies, cobbles and decking. My test is whether I could walk 200 metres in them without thinking about it.

Where I have actually been at night, and what worked

The venues I know at night, rather than the ones I read about:

The pattern across all of them is the same. One strong piece, everything else quiet, a layer in hand, and shoes chosen for the floor. If the strong piece is jewellery rather than the dress, I have written about how to style statement jewellery in Dubai.

Disclosure: Salvaje, Loona, Replay, The Theater and the Coya evening were press invitations or brand collaborations. My opinion is my own.

What I would skip

For daytime, start with what to wear in Dubai as a woman. If the invitation is a wedding, that is a different set of rules again in what to wear to a wedding in Dubai.

Questions people also ask

Can you wear trainers on a night out in Dubai?

Clean leather trainers with very little branding pass smart casual at plenty of Dubai venues, especially for an early dinner or a relaxed rooftop, and they work best with tailored trousers rather than jeans. Fine dining rooms and club doors will still say no, and canvas or running shoes are refused almost everywhere at night.

Can you wear shorts or flip-flops out at night in Dubai?

Not to a rooftop, a fine dining restaurant or a lounge, where all three are the standard refusals along with sportswear. Beach clubs are relaxed in the daytime, but by evening they expect a proper outfit too. Flat leather sandals are fine in a way that rubber flip-flops are not.

What does smart casual actually mean in Dubai?

It means you look like you thought about it: a dress, or trousers with a good top, and real shoes. It does not require heels or a blazer. The easiest test is whether the outfit would look fine in a photograph you did not know was being taken.

How cold do Dubai restaurants really keep the air conditioning?

Cold enough that regulars carry a layer in August. Dining rooms, cinemas and hotel lobbies are cooled hard, so bare arms plus a two-hour dinner is uncomfortable. A blazer, a long shirt or a light wrap solves it and you can carry it outdoors without ruining the outfit.

What should a woman wear to a club in Dubai?

A body-skimming dress, a satin or mesh top with tailored trousers, or a co-ord, with a small bag and shoes you can stand in. Groups are assessed at the door, so the whole group should be dressed to the same level. Avoid beachwear, sportswear and anything you cannot dance in.
