Whether you live here or you are just visiting, an abaya is one of the most useful and elegant things you can own in Dubai. It suits the climate, it works everywhere from a mall run to a wedding, and there is a version at every price. The only real questions are where to buy, how much to pay, and how to spot a good one. Here is everything I have learned.
Where do you find affordable abayas in Dubai?
Old Deira is the heart of budget abaya shopping. Naif Souk has rows of vendors with every style, fabric and colour, and the nearby Al Manal Centre is a reliable spot for good deals. Across the creek, Meena Bazaar in Bur Dubai is full of small shops and tailors, where a simple embroidered abaya can cost as little as 95 dirhams. Prices at stalls often start around 80 to 100 dirhams, and bargaining is expected, so never accept the first number.
Where do you buy designer and contemporary abayas?
For polished, modern pieces, head to the boutiques:
- Hanayen, founded in Dubai in 1990, is one of the most trusted names in Emirati attire, with boutiques including The Dubai Mall and free delivery across the UAE. A safe, quality choice.
- Mauzan, on City Walk, is known for feminine, beautifully beaded designs in soft, flowing fabrics, with prices roughly from 800 dirhams into the thousands.
- DAS Collection and similar contemporary labels mix modern cuts with modest design, good for everyday elegance.
Prices in these boutiques are fixed, but you are paying for fabric, tailoring and finish that last.
Can you get an abaya custom made?
Yes, and it is one of the best things about shopping here. Tailors in Meena Bazaar will make an abaya to your measurements, often within a few days, and Abaya Mall in Mirdif, three storeys of shops with on-site tailors, can adjust a piece or build one from scratch, sometimes within 24 hours. Bring a picture of what you want, choose your fabric, and you will have something made just for you, often for less than a designer piece off the rack.
How do you judge a good abaya?
A few things separate an abaya you will love from one you will not wear:
- Fabric: nida, a soft matte crepe, is the everyday standard because it drapes well and resists wrinkles. For summer, look for lightweight versions.
- Stitching: check for neat, even seams and a proper lining, especially on sheer fabrics.
- Cut and length: it should skim rather than cling, and clear the floor by an inch or two so it moves well.
How much should an abaya cost?
It is a wide range. Simple souk abayas start near 80 to 100 dirhams, a good everyday abaya in decent nida usually sits between 300 and 600 dirhams, contemporary boutique pieces run several hundred to over a thousand, and designer occasion abayas climb into the thousands. For most people the 300 to 600 band is the sweet spot for quality you will actually reach for.
Where can you bargain, and where can you not?
At the Deira souk stalls, Meena Bazaar and many independent shops, yes, and you can often get 20 to 35 percent off, especially when you buy more than one. In mall boutiques and with established designers, prices are fixed, so save your energy for the souk. My advice: buy one beautifully tailored abaya for occasions, and a couple of easy everyday ones from Deira or a tailor. You will wear all of them.
